STORIES FROM OUR SOCIAL REPORTERS
http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories

Social Reporting Findings and Call for Writers

From September to December 2011, 12 voluntary writers and a voluntary editor from different Transition initiatives committed to collaboratively writing a group blog and publishing a new story every day. For them this was one post per fortnight. For the editor it was seven days a week. Together they produced an extraordinary and honest account of life in Transition; the ups and downs, the thrills and the disappointments, the challenges of swimming against the mainstream narrative's current in an effort to re-set our cultural stories, help us all align to a more realistic worldview, and give back some pride to our local communities.

In 2012 we will be continuing our daily posts, exploring and reflecting on all Transition subjects under the sun, and extend a call for new writers to share their experiences of being in Transition. This is a brief overview of findings from the Social Reporters' end of pilot survey,

Arts and Creativity

Use or Ornament
This phrase articulates an age-old debate about the role of the arts in our society.

Looking Back, Looking Forward
Highlights from last year and visioning for this

To start the year Transition-style we are having a month of Pausing for Reflection and Visioning ahead. In these first two weeks we'll be looking back at our 3 month pilot and selecting some of its most striking posts and republishing one of them each day. Tough call! Because there were many brilliant ones.

FILMS

In Transition 2.0 Update

'In Transition 2.0' is nearly ready to be unveiled to the world! It draws together stories from around the world showing Transition initiatives at the various stages of transitioning their communities. In order to be able to feature some of the stories from overseas, they ran a crowd-funding process which raised the money required. An international team of volunteers have translated the film in 18 languages. Also, in spite of telling stories from around the world, no-one set foot on an aeroplane in order to make this film, local camera-people being enlisted to film each sequence, making this one of the lowest-carbon international films ever produced.

In early February, each of the initiatives whose stories are told in the film have been invited to host a preview. The premiere of 'In Transition 2.0' will be at a high profile event in late March (still under wraps). The DVD will be released around the time of the premiere.

Find out more and view the trailer (completed just yesterday) here

New Forest - Connecting Our Food
'Connecting to Our Food is a look at the resurgence of local food activity in the New Forest. The film shows the creativity that can spring from a passion for community-sourced produce, and how reconnecting with our food is at the fulcrum of our relationship to our own health, our home planet and each other.'
DVD of the 22 min film including screening license costs £5.00 plus any P&P.

TRAINING

How well is your Transition Initiative going? What can you do to take your Transition Initiative to the next level?
On 28-29 January in Bath, Transition Network will be holding its second Transition THRIVE training. We have designed this 2-day course to help existing Transition Initiatives take stock, identify their main barriers to sustaining momentum and develop strategies on how to move forward. Through case stories of other Transition Initiatives, group work and discussions, this training addresses each participant’s needs. It will offer practical advice on topics such as creating jobs in a local, green economy and could some of some the really inspiring examples of social enterprises work in your initiative.

The training will be run by Naresh Giangrande, co-founder of Transition Town Totnes and Transition Training, and Jenny Mackewn a senior lecturer at Bath University and member of Transition Bath.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"Community is nearly impossible in a highly monetized society like our own."
("That is because community is woven from gifts, which is ultimately why poor people often have stronger communities than rich people. If you are financially independent, then you really don't depend on your neighbors—or indeed on any specific person—for anything. You can just pay someone to do it, or pay someone else to do it.)"

A November Round-up of What’s Happening out in the World of Transition
Everyone is talking about money, so this month we start in Cornwall where the suggestion that Cornwall should set up its own currency made the national news; Prince Charles went shopping with Brixton Pounds!; Transition Town Cheltenham held a Transition festival to celebrate their first year of community, environmental and creative activities in town; In Monteveglio in Bologna they have revived an old tradition of planting a new tree for every child born in the town that year; In a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, an open evening invited people to “create the community we want to live in”. These are just a small taster of the many Transition activities - read more here:

The Introduction to ‘The Transition Companion’
This book seeks to answer the question: “What would it look like if the best responses to peak oil and climate change came not from committees and Acts of Parliament, but from you and me and the people around us?” It’s a big question, which is why it requires this relatively big book to address it. Read the rest of the Introduction to the book here:

SOCIAL REPORTING

A round up of some social reporting articles from November, from the big picture to the small print, with everything you wanted to read about transition and more!

Food and Health

The Seeds of Healing
The easy part of Transition is all that attractive busy-ness about food and energy, local currency and sustainable business.
http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/caroline-jackson/2011-11/seeds-healing

Inner Transition

Culture for a Healthy World
Culture both expresses something of who we are and also shapes us – tells us what’s expected in order to belong.
http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/guest-editor/2011-11/culture-healthy-world

Under the Rocks and Stones
To quote the post-punk classic Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads, ‘You may ask yourself: “Well, how did I get here?”’

Cenedl heb iaith yw cenedl heb galon*

wounds this country has suffered under the occupation of the English.

Economics

OccupyTransition, or ‘this Halloween I dressed as the economy’
Most of those I have met at OccupyLondon hadn’t previously heard of Transition, and
that got me thinking about the parallels and differences between the two movements…

Time to Get to Work
“it’s the economy, stupid” could join “let them eat cake” in the double irony Hall of Fame.

Navigating Community Chaos

Navigating Change
Evolution or mutation? From 'hungry caterpillar' to 'beautiful butterfly'?

All Hands on Deck - from Control to Relationship
What does chaos look like? an inability to respond in the face of an overwhelm of stimulus?
http://bit.ly/All_hands_on_deck

People Get Ready, There's a Crisis Coming!
Communities with active Transition initiatives will fare undoubtedly better than those without because already there will be a committed group of people who is used to meet
and work together

People and Connections

People and Connections - David Fleming

The legacy of the many life changing and life enhancing conversations that occurred
there, and ideas that found form under its eaves.

Some of us can see in the dark, and we know what's coming if we don't pass on the fire.

THINKING ALOUD

The Seven Ages of Transition
Sometimes it is suggested that Transition only appeals to older people, whereas Occupy,
for example, tends to attract more younger people. But is that the case?
http://transitionculture.org/2011/11/25/the-seven-ages-of-transition/

Community resilience, Transition, and why government thinking needs both
The latest “national statement for how individual and community resilience can work”, published by the Cabinet Office in March of this year refers explicitly to the Transition movement, and as such deserves a post reflecting on it.
http://transitionculture.org/2011/11/22/community-resilience-transition-and-why-government-thinking-needs-both/

Transitioners debate how to engage Occupy movement
Not all Transitioners agree that Occupy is a good angle for local groups devoted to
making their communities more resilient.
http://transitionvoice.com/2011/11/transitioners-debate-how-to-engage-occupy-movement/

Rob Hopkins Reflections at OccupyLSX St Paul’s Cathedral
What Occupy is doing that matters so much is that it is holding a space.

The October Transition podcast
Local currencies, Transition Councils and Declarations of Food Independence

Life after the end of economic growth
A continually rising GDP is not necessarily possible – or even desirable. So why do
policymakers obsess over it? Richard Heinberg comments in the Guardian

REVIEW
Shut Down: A Story of Economic Collapse and Hope

Collapse could happen, literally, overnight! I didn’t imagine that the most powerful
and complex civilization in world history could collapse in 24-72 hours. That is,
until I read this book.

COMING UP

Transition in Practice
January 3 – 13, Schumacher College
This two week course, taught by pioneers and leaders of the Transition movement looks at what it is about Transition that has created such widespread engagement around changing how we live. The course has a special focus on the emerging economic innovations being pioneered in Totnes. The ambitious aim of this course is to bring together models and practices from many different fields to create a synthesised working map of the transition to a healthy, sustainable, thriving way of life. Based on direct experience of community change from the Transition movement we will explore understandings of how change happens from economics and permaculture as well as social movements, psychology and spiritual traditions. And we will visit and learn from people who are putting these understandings into practice as businesses and community projects.

In Transition 2 film crowd funding call

It takes a community to make a community film. The 'In Transition 2.0' film production team announces its first ever crowd funding campaign! Help us raise funds to pay film makers around the world to tell stories showing what Transition looks like in Brazil, Portugal, US, Canada, New Zealand and Japan. Hear about the film's progress and how you can get involved.

All over England tents are appearing in their thousands across green fields and meadows. Festivals are fast becoming a great way to get a taste of a whole variety of practical skills at the many workshops on offer. This report from Sunrise in June.
Sunrise Off-Grid 18-21st August
"Turn Off & Switch On" is the theme for this year's Sunrise Off-Grid. There is a jam packed programme of workshops and talks in the Tin Village, a 12 module course in the Off-Grid College, a Resilient Farms Conference examining the future of farming in the UK with contributions from Michael Eavis. Plus a host of top speakers including Rob Hopkins and Patrick Whitefield. Oh and there is music as well as lots and lots more!
Uncivilisation 2011 - Looking for Hope in the Dark 19-21 August
While the Dark Mountain Festival looks at the challenges we face from a slightly different angle from Transition, it has much in sympathy with our view on how we should respond.
Transition Camp South East 7-9th October
In it's fourth year, this late autumn camp has more on site facilities this year and a fuller programme. So don't put that tent away for the winter untill you've been to this camp in the heart of Sussex.

Quote Of The Month
"When I looked at this working-together in the visioning it looked like an energy field, the kind of energy field you sense when you stand by a hive humming with bees. A hum of warmth and intelligence that allows people to naturally collaborate and make that low-energy downshift happen. You don’t need data or climate science to persuade your tricky mind. You just need to tune in and act."
